4 Days Salt Route from Varzi to Camogli: From the Apennines to the Ligurian Sea

This trek requires a demanding effort, it is necessary to be very fit and sporty. Practicing aerobic sports (running, cycling, swimming) is the best way to be ready for the trek. If you do not play sports normally, it is suitable to do a little training at least six months before beginning this trek with running and cycling twice a week combining some squats and lunges (10 squats + 20 lunges) to tone up your muscles. You should go regularly hiking in your country with a 600 m minimun elevation gain. This physical training before trekking is very important.

Paths are usually easy, we walk in large footpath, meadows, woods and dirty roads. You should consider anyway that the Apennines ground when wet is very muddy.

On average, you will walk from 3 to 7 hours per day. You should consider that the estimated walking time don’t consider lunch break. During the day we will have some break to eat and drink on the road.

This refers to the vertical distance you walk each day of trekking. If you don’t have clear the distance, we can roughly compare: 100 m of elevation gain can correspond to approximately 25 floors of stairs in a building. Don’t be scared by these numbers, the paths, except for a few, are never steep and constant like the stairs of a building. You should consider that this elevation is spread in the distance and time we will walk. (usually during one day)

Examples:
400 m elev. gain in 10 Km spread in one day is not a steep path and unless you are lazy you can manage it!

800 or 1.000 m elev. gain in 4 – 8 Km is very steep and you need to be fit

A hike tends to be on trails through mountains or trails through bush or country terrain. Trails are usually visible paths, but terrain and trails are rougher and sometimes rocky. There may be some steep trails and it is important to read the features in each proposal. Hiking generally involves walking up and down rough terrain so you need to be in general in a good shape and fit.

A walk tends to be done on defined paths and reasonably smooth surfaces without too many obstacles in the way. Walking tends to not require any special equipment, other than a day pack with the essentials. Walks are shorter and can be enjoyed by any age group with relative fitness.

This is a group tour, accommodation are different from village to village. In some cases we are in little hotels and in other cases we are in b&Bs like apartments with rooms and common toilets. On request it is possible to have a single room with a surcharge.

We sleep in different kind of accommodation. By the way usually bathroom and shower facility are one every 2 or 3 people.

We suggest always bringing some food such as: a sandwich, a fruit or dried fruit and a litre of water. For the first day backpacking you need to buy food in advance (day before departure). In villages where we stop sleeping it is possible to order a packed lunch.
