Overview
Backpacking North Piedmont
If you are looking for an authentic alpine adventure, backpacking Piedmont through the Veglia Devero Natural Park is a world-class experience. Located in the heart of the Lake Maggiore Alps, this park is a true hiker’s paradise. With very few ski lifts and a vast network of shelters, it offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in pristine nature, surrounded by 3,000m peaks and breathtaking views of the Swiss and Italian 4,000m giants.
Alpine Scenery Along the Swiss Border
This trekking route runs directly along the Swiss border and is twinned with the Landschaftspark Binntal in the Swiss Valais. Because this area remains a hidden gem, you will enjoy a no-crowd experience as you cross the entire protected area. Over four days, you will discover the most beautiful alpine scenery in the Ossola region, from the lush pastures of Alpe Devero to the vast, flower-filled meadows that lead into the welcoming Val Formazza.
Exploring Veglia-Devero Natural Park and Formazza Valley
Discover the untouched beauty of Veglia-Devero Natural Park and the Formazza Valley, widely considered the most spectacular destinations for backpacking North Piedmont. In this protected wilderness, the alpine scenery remains pristine, offering a rare no-crowd experience. As you trek through the Lake Maggiore Alps, you will encounter marvelous endemic flora and have the chance for wildlife sightings, including typical alpine animals like chamois and marmots, all set against a backdrop of glacier views and snowcapped mountains.
Italian Alps backpacking: Glaciers, Peaks, and Alpine Lakes
While backpacking Piedmont, your journey will be framed by snowcapped mountains and crystal-clear alpine lakes. The trail offers spectacular glacier views and the chance to admire iconic peaks, including:
-
Monte Leone
-
Monte Cervandone
-
Punta della Rossa
-
Punta d’Arbola (known as Ofenhorn in Swiss German)
Discovering Walser Culture and Local Wildlife
Beyond the panorama, this trek is a journey through history. You will discover the Walser culture, a people of German origin who have inhabited these valleys since 1200 AD. Their “heroic” tradition of high-altitude farming and pastoralism shaped this landscape. As you walk, keep an eye out for endemic alpine plants, vibrant wildflowers, and local wildlife that call these valleys home.
Logistics: 4 Days of Hut to Hut Trekking
This hut to hut expedition has a duration of four walking days. During the summer, accommodations are provided in cozy, traditional alpine huts. After a day of exploring the Alpe Devero wilderness, you can relax in the evening with a typical, hearty hot meal—the perfect way to end a day of trekking in the Italian Alps.
