On the trail with four hikers from Florida
In August 2026, joined by Crystal, Brendan, Jennifer, and John, we set off on an unforgettable adventure: backpacking trekking in Aosta on the Glacial High Route. The weather forecast for the week was excellent. In addition, the group was eager to explore one of the most stunning alpine landscapes in Italy.
Discovering Glaciers and Alpine Lakes on the High Trail
On day one, starting from the small village of Rhêmes-Notre-Dame, our backpacking journey began. We trekked up the beautiful valley at the foot of Granta Parey to reach the cozy Refuge Le Fond. There, a delicious dinner and a good night’s sleep awaited us.
The following morning brought bright sunshine for a challenging day on the trail. We climbed up to discover pristine alpine lakes like Lake Goletta, nestled right at the foot of the glacier on Granta Parey’s northern face. Afterward, we continued through rocky terrain and scree. Finally, we reached Col Bassac Derè at 3,074 meters. This pass sits on the ridge between the Rhêmes and Valgrisenche valleys.

From the pass, the view was breathtaking: massive glaciers, including the vast Gliarietta Glacier beneath the summit of Grande Sassière, stretched out right on the French border. A long descent then brought us down to Refuge Bezzi for the night.
An Unforgettable Trekking Tour in the Aosta Valley
The third day of our trekking tour featured a long yet rewarding traverse through Valgrisenche. We hiked toward our next stop accompanied by sweeping views of towering peaks, vast alpine meadows, mountain streams, and serene pasturelands. Meanwhile, experiencing backpacking trekking in Aosta on the Glacial High Route offers unparalleled views of the Aosta Valley and its wild natural environment.

On the final day, due to a minor unexpected setback, we adapted our route and descended through a beautiful, fragrant larch forest in Valgrisenche.
It was a wonderfully cheerful, easygoing group. Furthermore, this experience backpacking trekking in Aosta on the Glacial High Route is one I will certainly remember fondly.
